What game makers want!

They have been vocal about wanting to put out shorter games, Games in episodes, and military shooters.
Obviously shorter games cost less to make, they can charge for each episode, thus paying for development, and they want to keep putting out those military shooters.
Maybe they should think about putting out games gamers like.
Most game makers have gone to keyboard controls even on PC's to draw in those console fans.
I personally hate the poorer graphics on consoles compared to PC games.

Follow the above link and download the patch 227F for Unreal.  Unreal still installs well on all Windows OS's.  Install Unreal and download and install the 227F patch.
Go to this link and download the high end textures.  Install the textures. Then you can run Unreal with improved opengl or directx graphics.
There are improved opengl and directx drivers at:  http://www.celticwarriors.net/Website/S3TC/Old/OpenGLInstallation/OpenGL.htm or http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ Sorry this last link is for UT and Rune.

Running Hexen 2 in opengl with UQE Hexen 2

Install Hexen 2 normally and then patch it with the 1.11 patch. http://www.gamershell.com/download_4562.shtml

You have to clean out the Hexen 2 files. Here is the link to the readme for that: http://www.quake-engine.com/download.aspx?game=hx2
Here is the actual text:
Patching Hexen II
This section applies if you do not have the mission pack.
Firstly, you need to make sure you have your copy of Hexen II is patched to the latest official version.
If your version of Hexen II is not version 1.11 you need to run the patch file "ph2v111.exe".
If you do not have this file, you can download it from the UQE website. (http://www.quake-engine.com/)
Once you have patched your copy of Hexen II to version 1.11, we can go to the next step.

Secondly, you need to "clean" your Hexen II game, by removing all old files.
We are intrested in the root folder, "/hexen2/", aswell as the game data folder "/data1/".
In the root folder, "/hexen2/", delete all files including the game EXE files, leaving only the following original file intact: "uninst.isu".
In the game data folder, "/data1/", delete all files including any CFG files, leaving only the following original files intact: "pak0.pak", "pak1.pak".
If there is a "/portals/" game data folder, delete it completely.

Theres one more cosmetic thing we need to do:
If you have already run GL Hexen II, there will be a directory named "/glhexen/" under your "/data1/" directory.
If the directory exists.. delete the "/glhexen/" directory.

Once this is done, you may continue and unzip to effectively install and upgrade your copy of Hexen II to UQE Hexen II to your game's
root "/hexen2/" directory.
When this has been completed successfully you can go ahead and enjoy UQE Hexen II !! :)

Do the above than download UQE Hexen 2 1.13 http://www.quake-engine.com/download.aspx?game=hx2
Just install the game engine into the prepared root hexen directory C:\hexen2 or whatever you named it.

Installing Quake and using DarkPlaces to play it

http://mhquake.blogspot.com/p/installing-quake-using-dos-box.html

The above link is directions for installing Quake using dosbox.
Quake will not install on Windows 7 64-bit. You need to use dosbox.
Get a frontend for Dosbox and get the 64-bit version of dosbox.
Once you get it installed just unzip you're favorite Quake source port into the directory.
Dark places or directq are nice ports.

http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/
Above is a link to the DarkPlaces Quake 1 engine.
It is the best port at this time.
When at the above site make sure to download Romi's rtlights file for Quake, and the darkforces models.

Create a darkforces directory
Unzip the darkforces port into that directory
Create an Id1 subdirectory
Copy pako.pak and pak1.pak from quake into the Id1 subdirectory
Follow the directions that come with Romis rtlights and the darkplaces models to install them.
All files can be downloaded from links at the darkforces website.

The lights are really good looking. Romis took time to hand process every single light source in Quake. The care shows.

Enjoy Retro gaming

Program to play Wolfenstein 3D

Here is a link to Newwolf a program to run Wolfenstein 3D in modern opengl.  Id Software released the source code. You need Wolf3d and the downloads from the newwolf site. here is the link:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=60692

Don't forget to download the Models and textures. They are put in the basewgl subdirectory.

Here is a great map collection for wolf3d. It is called Remake.zip and has 6 full episodes of maps to play, like the original. It is not a remake of the originals, but a new set of maps by Ken O'Brien.

http://www.belowe.com/Remake.zip

Put the original Wolf3d into it's directory. Put Newwolf into that directory. Put the texture and model packs into the basewgl subdirectory. Download remake.zip and unzip it into that same directory as all the rest have gone. Probably Wolf3d. Let all files be overwritten when it asks.

Enjoy!

Game makers don't like adventure games

Ever since Sierra was sold in the late 90's, Adventure games have become fairly rare.  There are a few good video games that came out. Such as, The Longest Journey (the best adventure game since the Space Quest Series,)  Syberia 1&2, The Whispered World.
Other than the above, game publishers have pretty much not made adventure games.  I have read that they consider them to expensive to make, and also too long to make.
In my opnion Lucas Arts decided to change the game interface to keyboard movement making them much more harder to play and tiring.  Have you tried using the arrow keys for moving, it is tiring and imprecise.
It is much easier to use the mouse and buttons for movement.
First person shooters are good, but I have tired of the military shooters that are endlessly coming out.  I think it is time for adventure games to start coming out again.
If you haven't played the following list of adventure games try them out.  Check the bargain bins and borrow them from your friends.
Monkey Island Series
Space Quest Series
Sam and Max
Indiana Jones Series
King's Quest Series
Phantasmagoria
Leisure Suit Larry Series
Loom
The Dig

This is a good start.  Check out my Retro Gaming Links for helpful files to help run these games.

Running The Seventh Guest on newer operating systems

Here is a DX player for the 7th Guest,

The 7th Guest

I found DirectX player that plays the game without the annoying pauses while moving.
Here is the link to the player. You can also get it through my Retro-gaming
links. http://www.computerhope.com/download/games.htm#10

Install the game in windows XP. Use the command prompt and you get there by going to start button-programs-accessories-command prompt.

Start up the command prompt. Put your 7th Guest disk into the CD drive.
Then type install.bat
The command prompt will run the install progam without flashing off fast.

The install disk is Disc #2. You can play the game with disk one.

Once the game is installed put the Beta player you downloaded into the game directory which by default is "ID".

Put disk #1 into the CD drive than run V32tng.exe.

Use Alt-enter tomake the game full screen.

Here is the readme from thr DX Player:

Purpose of this Blog on PC Retro-Gaming on a budget

9/19/2010

I am not rich.  I am not able to update my computer very often, so I started to find ways to game on my PC not spending alot of money on games.  Fortunately, there are older games that are available to download or play on-line for free.  I am anti-pirating games, but there are games that have been abandoned by the publisher.  Rather than let the game disappear both physically and mentally, I believe in saving the physical games files and encouraging people to play retro-games.  Of course, if you owe the games I will be talking about, super great.  Even better if you can buy a retro-game from the bargain bin.  What true gamer doesn't have a copy of Doom or Quake in a box in the back of their closet or in the basement.

The games I will talk about include patches for the games, mods and help to run them on modern computers.  I will talk about first person shooters mostly (my favorite), indie games, adventure games and more.  I will also talk about pet peives such as major publishers who have ignored adventure games for alot of years now.  I do not like console games, so sorry you console fans.  The nature of consoles do not lend themselves to game mods, so it would be a waste of time to talk about them.  I have a PC and have never used a Mac, or unix, or any other type of computer OS.

Any publisher who gets pissed off about some game I talked about, feel free to let me know about the problem.  I am a very reasonable person.

I am a 54 year male who has gamed since the early days of computing.  They didn't have PC's when I was in high school.  I started on a Tandy color computer.  Then moving to early 80286, 386, 386sx and 486 computers.  Now  I am writing this on my Wife's Dell notebook with Windows 7 64-bit on it.  Unfortunately it has Intel graphics on it, but it can run Opengl and has some ability to run newer games. But it could be better....

I am the creator of the Retro Gaming Links which http://www.jonja.net/ allows me to put in their Gaming Forums.  Thank you Scorp!  I plan on posting it on this blog sometime this week.  The RGL contains links to Retro-games, mods and patches for older games.  All games that appear there are either abandoned games, or games I own personally, or patches or mods which are free.  All Id Software games are not abandoned, but there are alot of patches and mods for their games to help you run the older games.  If you want to be a Retro-gamer check your local computer shops for good deals in older games.  I picked up PREY from a mail order company for 5 dollars.  You can't beat that.
The RGL has some dead links.  The nature of the web leads to constantly changing links.  I plan to try to find some new links for the dead links.  It is harder than you might think to maintain links to game files that are slowly disappearing.

If there is someone who might want to donate backup space for Retro Gaming files of older games that would be great.  It takes alot of hard disk space to save the files.  Some games files and programs are starting to disappear.

I have a number of posts at jonja.net that I will post here about particular games and how to get them to run on your computer.

I hope this will be useful to you gamers on a budget or just have trouble running older games.
