Ever since Sierra was sold in the late 90's, Adventure games have become fairly rare. There are a few good video games that came out. Such as, The Longest Journey (the best adventure game since the Space Quest Series,) Syberia 1&2, The Whispered World.
Other than the above, game publishers have pretty much not made adventure games. I have read that they consider them to expensive to make, and also too long to make.
In my opnion Lucas Arts decided to change the game interface to keyboard movement making them much more harder to play and tiring. Have you tried using the arrow keys for moving, it is tiring and imprecise.
It is much easier to use the mouse and buttons for movement.
First person shooters are good, but I have tired of the military shooters that are endlessly coming out. I think it is time for adventure games to start coming out again.
If you haven't played the following list of adventure games try them out. Check the bargain bins and borrow them from your friends.
Monkey Island Series
Space Quest Series
Sam and Max
Indiana Jones Series
King's Quest Series
Phantasmagoria
Leisure Suit Larry Series
Loom
The Dig
This is a good start. Check out my Retro Gaming Links for helpful files to help run these games.
